What Providers Say About The Handbook

"The book is beautiful, helpful, and easy to use." ~ Health Communicator, Kampala, Western Region, Rukungiri District, Uganda

"It's not just comprehensive and detailed, but simple and easy to understand for all providers. It's very good especially for doctors and providers who are not gynecologists or specialists, but who will be helping women with family planning anyway…" ~ Private OB GYN, Southern India

"This book is highly beneficial to providers most espeically in developing countries like Nigeria where efficient service delivery is a struggle." ~ Program Manager, Nigeria

"I love the book, it almost acts as a bible for my FP work.” ~ Teacher/Trainer, Uganda

"As we deal with many divisions within the government, such as the different departments of the Ministry of Health, we would be grateful if you could send us 20 copies of this publication." ~ UNFPA Representative, Eritrea

"It's an accurate and easy to follow reference." ~ Program Manager, Bangladesh

"I'd like five or ten extra to give to people I work with at the International Planned Parenthood and some women's groups. People ask questions of the women's groups and they need this book so that they can give accurate answers and the right information." ~ Private OB GYN, Southern India

"The book has helped to change the way we counsel patients and also helped us to solve doubts that we have about family planning methods." ~ Govt OB GYN, Southern India

"We were going to suggest a rest or break between spells of COCs because of metabolic changes to a woman's body from COCs, but because the book says it is not necessary, we will not recommend a break." ~ Medical Officer, Southern India

"The description of what patients will ask and how to answer are very helpful because we don't counsel patients; we just tell them to come for the operation [sterilization]. It answers common questions in a simplified manner and everything is there given very nicely." ~ Govt OB GYN, Southern India

"I wanted information about emergency contraception and it's nicely given about EC and the combinations of regular OCs you can take. Nowadays EC is finally coming to India so I wanted to know." ~ Govt OB GYN, Southern India

"It was good to see the diagram of the female condom. Only some people use it, but they ask how to use it and I can show them this picture." ~ Govt OB GYN, Southern India

"The chapters and table of contents are so easy to read and I can take diagrams from the online version to make presentations and PowerPoint slides." ~ Medical Officer, Southern India

The manual was a more concise format of the handbook and the initial print run was 1,000 copies.
Worldwide Population Council and INFO Handbook content was adapted to develop Balanced Counseling Strategy cards with information on 16 family planning methods. The Balanced Counseling Strategy combines an algorithm for family planning counseling with a set of job aids, such as cards and pamphlets on available methods. The cards will be translated into Spanish and French and will be distributed with a CD-ROM of the materials for easy adaptation for use in local family planning programs. Locally adapted versions of the Balanced Counseling Strategy have been tested in 4 countries (Guatemala, Kenya, Peru, and South Africa).
