Using the Thesaurus
The
ne Source Thesaurus is a controlled vocabulary developed by the INFO Project which includes subject terms for the following areas of knowledge: Family Planning Methods and Services, Fertility, Adolescent Reproductive Health, Gender and Health, Health Communication, HIV/AIDS/STIs, Maternal and Child Health, Population Law and Policy, and Demography.
The
ne Source Thesaurus provides an Alphabetical and Hierarchical display of all keywords used to index the resources found in its database. From both displays you can:
-
View the details of a specific keyword
-
Add a keyword to your search criteria
-
Search an individual keyword directly from the thesaurus
Alphabetical Display
Clicking on the "Choose Keywords" button from More Search Options opens the thesaurus in a new window. The initial display allows you to browse keywords aphabetically.
-
Click on a letter to move to the first term beginning with that letter.

-
Position your cursor on the keyword and click to view a detailed description, including a definition and listing of broader, narrower, and related terms.
-
Keywords in italics, such as ABC are "non-used" terms. Click on a non-used term to view the correct term to use for searching.
-
Click "ADD" to insert that keyword into your search criteria on the More Search Options page. Each additional keyword added will insert that term to your search criteria. Each keyword will be separated by the boolean "AND".
-
Click "SEARCH" to initiate a search on the individual keyword.
Hierarchical Display
Selecting the Keyword Hierarchy link redisplays the keywords in the Hierarchical display, which link keywords to other keywords expressing more general and more specific concepts, i.e., broader and narrower terms. Keywords are grouped together into general subdivisions, Subject Categories.
The initial display shows only the top terms in each Subject Category. Each top term has a + to the left. Clicking on the + opens up the hierarchy and displays narrower keywords. By clicking on each + you can browse keywords by various levels of specificity.
