Rationale: few guidelines exist for evaluation of information products and services
Tara Sullivan gave a presentation on the progress to date on the HIPNet M&E Guidelines for Information Products and Services. The guidelines have been through two rounds of review (internal review and HIPNet review) and the core writing/editing team is in the midst of finalizing the guidelines for a final round of review by USAID and M&E technical experts.
There are a few areas where HIPNet members can help.
1. HIPNet members can help populate the guide with examples of the indicators from their respective projects.
2. In addition, HIPNet members can share a success story in using a particular data collection methodology, including its advantages and disadvantages.
The M&E Subcommittee of HIPNet will send out an email in the near future specifying how HIPNet members can contribute to these areas of the guide.
Click to view Tara’s presentation as well as a list of the indicators (for a ranking exercise).

Brian Pagels and Neha Suchak of PSP-One gave a presentation on the new PSP-One online resource center at http://www.psp-one.com/section/resource/
PSP-One is funded by USAID from 2004-09. This is a 2nd version of web site which was relaunched a few months ago. The goal of the resource center is to share private sector health information across private sector organizations. The resource center serves as a venue for sharing publications as well. PSP-One partners and other organizations can use the resource center to share anything related to private sector health
How to submit materials: Send them via e-mail to info@psp-one.com. What to submit? Anything related to private sector partnerships such as new clinical activities, collaborative activities, descriptions of launch events, web sites or links
Neha Suchak & Laura Raney Neha and Laura shared copies of a consolidated spreadsheet that contained information on e-mail lists, e-mail newsletters, and websites where HIPNet members can share information about new publications, new web resources, etc. Laura also volunteered to update the spreadsheet with new resources or changes. If you would like to see a copy of the spreadsheet or suggest additions, contact Laura at lraney@pcdc.org.
Nathan Golon, who currently works at PopCouncil but has experience working as a broadcast journalist, showed the group an online presentation that he developed which uses still photos and music to present an organization or issue in a way that is both dynamic and compelling. Nathan will be moving to Guatemala and, in addition to doing some work for PopCouncil; he is also interested in working for other organizations. Nathan can be contacted at nathan@nathangolon.com. His website (http://www.nathangolon.com) is currently being redesigned, but it is still possible to view the video he presented at the Hipnet meeting. He will be adding photo galleries and high definition video soon.
Nathan’s presentation led to a discussion of photo policies and hiring free lance photographers. We agreed to continue that discussion at the next HIPNet meeting. Organizations will be asked to share their photo policies, if they have one. Additional discussion of photography ethics can be found on the Photoshare web site at http://www.photoshare.org/phototips/developethics.php.
We also agreed to share information on free lance photographers or staff photographers to enable one organization to piggyback on a photographer hired by other organizations. Laura Raney volunteered to coordinate this effort. If you have a photographer who is planning to travel or are thinking of hiring one, please contact Laura at lraney@pcdc.org.
Sandra Jordan reported that Margaret Neuse has retired from USAID and that Scott Radloff has taken over her position. He will still be doing two jobs until October. Ellen Starbird, who was the head of the PEC division, is working as his deputy. Ken Yamashita is the new head of Office of HIV/AIDS. He has 20+ years of experience working at USAID. Chris Thomas is still working at HIDN. The three offices are working on developing a communication strategy for the Bureau as a whole – pooling their communication resources. Mark Dybol is the new PEPFAR director; he is thought to be a good choice by the activist community.
Returned Peace Corps Volunteers publication Sandra has been working with this group. The fall issue of their publication will focus on family planning and will include interviews/articles with Mechai (Thailand), the president of Madagascar, Jane Goodall, and Amy Cohen. There will be a reception / panel discussion on October 11 in Washington, DC. The magazine will also include advertisements, which can be purchased. They are also looking for broader distribution. Contract Sandra if you are interested in an ad, the event, or broader distribution. (sjordan@usaid.gov)
FHI is doing a project on long-term methods (LAPM) and looking for LAPM resources from other CAs, especially advocacy efforts. If you have anything, contact Beth Robinson (brobinson@fhi.org)

Heather Johnson (INFO) and Jessica Morris (FCI) facilitated a discussion on problems with shipping and customs. Some of the issues that were discussed include:
1. Excessive customs charges – seems to happen with different companies and in a broad range of countries.
2. Specific problem countries mentioned included Peru, Mexico, Bangladesh, some countries in West Africa
3. Sometimes letters of donation don’t work
4. Global Health Council – uses M-Bag which is not guaranteed and can not be tracked.
5. INFO Project uses ocean freight for large shipments (not time-sensitive) with pretty good results. The ocean freight provider varies based on country.
6. Tips for getting materials through included:
-Always use letters of donation and be discreet with declaring the value of materials on customs invoices/commercial invoices. Always include at least five copies of all paperwork per package.
-Some items require duties to be paid even though the purpose is educational materials. Look into this before shipping or you can face delays and additional charges. (CD-Roms are a good example)
-Try different shipping companies. For example, Alison Lee recommends a company called Go Air Express (http://www.goairexpress.com ) , contact person: Michael
Contacts at CAs with experience who might be able to give you advice:
1. Sherry Cotaco (MSH) scotaco@msh.org
2. Alison Lee (Horizons) alee@pcdc.org
3. Heather Johnson hjohnso@jhuccp.org
Action item:
Please share your own experiences and tips for best practices in shipping by completing this anonymous survey. If you have had more than one experience, you can complete the survey more than one time. All results will be shared with HIPNet members and we will try to update people as we hear about countries where problems are occurring or companies that are exceptionally good or bad.
