Injectables News

Research Plans from Family Health International...
Many women in South Africa are denied injections of DMPA and NET-EN because they are late, even though they return within the grace period of two weeks. FHI is conducting operations research to test ways of encouraging clients to return on time and providers to follow the service guidelines about the grace period. Providers also need to be able to rule out pregnancy if a client returns more than two weeks late.

An analysis of data from previous studies of DMPA in Africa and Asia may support extending the DMPA grace period from two weeks to a month.

FHI is evaluating Madagascar's new program that allows community distributors to provide DMPA.

In Uganda, the Save the Children (USA) program of community distribution of injectables in Nakasongola district is being scaled up in two more districts.

FHI plans to assess self-injection in Uganda when the subcutaneous formulation of DMPA becomes available in developing countries.
