Dr. Jim Shelton's Pearls "Pearl" for the week of December 18, 2003

Private Sector Champ

Q:One country has had a remarkable transition from the public to the private sector. In 1991, about 76% of current users of modern methods received their method from the public sector. By 2003, that percentage had dropped to 28% for the public sector. (Even though overall contraceptive prevalence has continued to rise.)

Can you name the country?
Hint: It is one of the largest countries in the world.

A:Indonesia. (See next Pearl for details.)

The "Pearls" offer answers to commonly asked questions about family planning. These "Pearls" are prepared by Dr. James D. Shelton, Senior Medical Scientist, Office of Population, United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
