"Pearl" for the week of August 11, 2004

Contraceptive Use in Depression

Q:A number of women in our clinic suffer from depression. Has WHO taken a position on depression and eligibility for various contraceptive methods?

A:Yes. In fact the addition of depressive disorders is one of the changes in the newly issued 3rd Edition of WHO's Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use. The WHO classification for depressive disorders is Category 1 (Use method in any circumstances) for all the hormonal methods and IUDs.

For more information, see Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use - Third edition - 2004
