Dr. Jim Shelton's Pearls

"Pearl" for the week of September 6, 2006

New USAID Award for Contraceptive Implants (Jadelle)

Q:Since the maker of Norplant contraceptive implants is phasing out manufacture, can you give me an update on USAID support for implants?

A:Yes. The winning bid in a recent competitive procurement was from the Schering Oy company for Jadelle implants. Jadelle is the 2-rod successor to Norplant which releases the same progestin levonorgestrel at very similar low levels, and is labeled as lasting 5 years. The base price under the contract is $21 per set. Shipments are scheduled to begin in January 2007.
