One Year Later: Medical Abortion After FDA Approval
On September 28, 2000, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved mifepristone (RU486), the first dedicated medical abortion pill regimen. Many advocates on both sides of the abortion debate predicted that arrival of this new option would transform the abortion landscape - for women, for doctors, and for politicians. So, a year later, where are we?

Gender or Sex: Who Cares?
This skills-building resource pack on gender and reproductive health is designed for adolescents and youth workers, with an emphasis on violence, HIV/STIs, unwanted pregnancy and unsafe abortion. The pack, which includes a manual, curriculum cards and overhead transparencies/handouts, provides an introduction to the topic of gender and sexual & reproductive health using a progressive focus that works from simpler subjects and exercises towards more complex topics and participatory activities. Emergency Contraception
Emergency contraception (EC) is a contraceptive option that can prevent pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse, either by taking EC pills within 72 hours or by having an IUD inserted within five days of unprotected sexual intercourse. As such, it is an important contraceptive choice for all women that can help reduce the incidence of unplanned pregnancies and of abortions.

The FamPlan Glossary
FamPlan, a family planning terminology glossary in English, Spanish, and French that is shared by the USAID-related Reproductive Health Materials Working Group (RHMWG), is now on-line on Family Health International's (FHI) Web site at http://www.fhi.org/famplan. The intention of the glossary is to provide a forum for standardizing the translation of family planning terminology in all publications that are produced by member organizations.
