Effect of Nonoxynol-9 Gel on Urogenital Gonorrhea and Chlamydial Infection (research abstract)
While effective in killing sexually transmitted disease pathogens in test tubes, research on Nonoxynyl-9 as used in gels, sponges, and films has provided mixed evidence of its effectiveness to prevent diseases as commonly used. This study of sexually active women in Cameroon finds no protective effect of Nonoxynol-9 on Chlamydia and Gonorrhea.

Contraceptive Efficacy and Cycle Control with the Ortho Evra/Evra Transdermal System: The Analysis of Pooled Data (PubMed abstract)
In this study, researchers pooled data on 3,319 women from three pivotal studies of the contraceptive patch. They found that, in contraceptive patch users, the overall annual probability of pregnancy was 0.8% and the method failure probability was 0.6%.

This publication showcases a wealth and variety of media and communications strategies and materials used around the world to end violence against women. A collaboration between UNIFEM and the Media Materials Clearinghouse of the Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs, the publication highlights materials and campaigns, providing descriptions of innovative communications methods for awareness raising. It is an attempt to facilitate information sharing between organizations working to end violence against women, so that strong and effective strategies can be replicated in other contexts. The publication is accompanied by a larger electronic database containing thousands of materials available via the internet (www.endvaw.org) so that the collection of accessible materials can be increased, constituting an updated communications resource base.
