Writing and Production

  1. How many issues are published each year?
Previously, Population Reports issues were published four times year under the Information & Knowledge for Optimal Health (INFO) Project, three (3) full length issues are published each year.
  2. What topics does Population Reports cover?
Each issue is assigned to one of 10 different series:

Series A: Oral Contraceptives Series D: Male Sterilization Series K: Injectables and Implants Series Q: Maximizing Access and Quality
Series B: Intrauterine Devices Series H: Barrier Methods Series L: Issues in World Health
Series C: Female Sterilization Series J: Family Planning Methods Series M: Special Topics

  3. How are your topics selected?
Editorial staff rely on a number of mechanisms for selecting topics for the journal. Throughout the year, the INFO project receives solicited and unsolicited suggestions from readers who write in and from those who submit responses to ongoing readership surveys. An editorial advisory board, made up of 23 reproductive health experts from around the world, is also surveyed for suggestions. Periodically, we send our Editorial Advisory Committee a list of proposed topics, either individually as they arise, or several in a list, and invite them to comment on and prioritize them. For longer publications, Advisory Committee input, along with that of readers and partner organizations are presented and discussed at biannual topics meetings, attended by USAID and cooperating agency representatives. Finally, based on the discussions the INFO editorial team will propose three report topics in INFO's annual workplan for approval by USAID. For short publications with quick turn-around time, we follow a similar process but without waiting for topics meetings.

  4. Can I submit a topic for a Population Reports issue?
Yes, we welcome all suggestions. You may submit your recommendation to orders@jhuccp.org with any reference materials. Also, please see the List of Upcoming Issues.

  5. Who writes the reports?
Population Reports issues are researched and written by staff or consultant researchers and writers, with guidance from the Editor and Project Director.

  6. How are Population Reports prepared?
Population Reports are researched and written by staff or consultant writers. For each report an outline is written and externally reviewed. Then, writers prepare a review draft of the report. The INFO Editorial Advisory Committee and up to 30 additional reviewers selected for their expertise in the particular topic read the review draft and provide comments. Writers and researchers then revise the report based on reviewer comments. The report then enters the production phase where tables, figures, and photographs are added. The report is then laid out in-house. When finished it is sent to a local printing house to be printed.

  7. Do you publish in foreign languages?
The journal is published in English, French, and Spanish. Selected issues are translated into Portuguese and made available on the Internet in collaboration with Bibliomed. Selected issues in Arabic, Russian, Turkish, and other languages are occasionally published in collaboration with local organizations.

  8. How do you organize the references you use in Population Reports?
References are numbered and organized alphabetically in the bibliography at the end of each Population Reports. Only the most useful references are listed at the end of each issue but all references are available on-line. Population Reports writers use bibliographic software called EndNote to organize and manage the references while writing each report. An EndNote connection file, which will enable researchers to import references from POPLINE into EndNote, is available on request. You may submit your request to orders@jhuccp.org

  9. Where do Population Reports Researchers and Writers get their data and other information?
See list of recommended sites for Information on Population and Reproductive Health.

  10. Besides Population Reports, what other resources are available through the INFO Project?
We offer a variety of resources to bring you the most accurate, current information in Population and Reproductive Health. The INFO Project collaborates with many partners and organizations to bring you these resources.
