New Condoms for the
      New Millennium

During the past decade a few new types of condoms have reached the market, and other new condoms are being designed and tested. Perhaps the most important event has been the introduction of the female condom, which has proved popular and is now used in over 30 countries (564).

Improved technology and better quality control mean that the best condom manufacturers can now make very uniform, strong, and elastic latex condoms (207, 564). Recent innovations include new materials, sizes, shapes, colors, textures, scents, and flavors and new kinds of lubricants (210). Additionally, new barrier methods and microbicides are being developed.
