Meeting Overview
On July 24, 2007, from 9 am until noon, the “Youth GLP Partners” held its third meeting. The meeting included organizations funded by the USAID Youth Global Leadership Priority (GLP) funds and others by invitation. Participants briefly introduced themselves and summarized the status of their Youth GLP activities and other major youth projects in their organizations. These summaries were followed by:
IYWG Branding Discussion/Update
Mahua Mandal of USAID explained the importance of creating more visibility for the IYWG and the work we are doing. An important way to accomplish this is to have the IYWG “branding” on the publications produced with GLP funds. This will heighten awareness of the group and emphasize the importance of these GLP funds. Mandal pointed out that FHI, which serves as the secretariat for the IYWG meetings, will also coordinate this branding process and any joint IYWG dissemination efforts. Bill Finger of FHI and Mandal emphasized that the branding “banner” is not a formal logo. Several examples of how the banner is being used were distributed, including YouthLens copies and a new IYWG publication from MEASURE Evaluation. Mandal encouraged Partners to coordinate any discussions about colors and placement with Finger. Mandal also pointed out that Partners should specify in the acknowledgements of the publication that Youth GLP funds were used.
Discussion of IYWG Fall Meeting
The IYWG had decided in February to have a large meeting in the spring and fall of 2007. Prior to the July 24 meeting, a summary of plans for the fall 2007 meeting were distributed, including possible dates and topics. First, Mercedes Torres of FHI summarized results from the participant survey of the May 7 large meeting. This reminded the group of several issues to keep in mind for the fall meeting, such as number of speakers on panels, the informal meetings at lunch, and other issues. The group then decided on the meeting date, tentatively scheduled for Nov. 28 or 29, depending on the venue availability, or if necessary the first week in December. FHI would investigate venues and inform Partners of the final data and place by the end of August. (The date was confirmed as Dec. 6 to accommodate venue availability and meeting conflicts.)
Finger then summarized the planning process with USAID for the fall meeting, which led to the proposal distributed for consideration prior to the meeting. The large day-long meeting would focus on two topics, each for half of the day, with the day organized so that participants can attend the morning, afternoon, or both without missing any sequential sessions. The two suggested topics are (1) Integration of HIV and Contraception and (2) Parenting. The Partners agreed on the approach and topic choice. We decided to have lunch, which would tie the half-day meetings together for those who wanted the time for networking, but that topical discussions would not be held during lunch (as were done in May). Also, summaries of each half-day meeting would be more focused, probably by a single expert rather than a panel. Several groups have expressed some interest in a half-day technical meeting for a smaller audience, including measurements issues on community involvement and monitoring and evaluation for program managers. FHI will explore whether to host these two topics as a single half-day follow-on technical meeting for a smaller audience, as done with the May 8 follow-on to the large May 7 meeting. Suggestions on the two topics included the following:
Integration
Planning committee – Mary Ann Abeyta-Behnke (USAID), Theresa Norton (JHU/INFO), Rose Wilcher (FHI)
Parenting
Planning Committee – Shanti Conly (USAID), Cate Lane (ESD), Nancy Murray (Constella Futures), Carla Paredes (PAHO), Aysa Saleh-Ramirez (IRH/Georgetown)
Suggestions for Marketing the IYWG
FHI should look into possibilities for promoting the IYWG and its website through multiple ways. These could include e-conferences to gain perspectives from people working in country projects and meetings. Two specific upcoming opportunities are the August meeting of HIPNET, the group of communications staff from agencies with USAID/G/RH funds, and the IBP Partners meeting in November.
