Filling the Gap: New Tools Available for Youth Programs
May 8, 2007, 8:30am – 1:00pm
Academy for Educational Development
Washington, DC

The objective of this workshop was to familiarize participants with the three tools listed below, which were developed under the YouthNet program in collaboration with partner organizations. Participants then had an opportunity to discuss how the tools could be utilized in their home organizations — at both the headquarters and field levels. The agenda is included below.

Faith-Based Curricula for Working with Youth
Bill Finger and Kat Tumlinson, Family Health International (FHI)

These include two curricula designed to work with adults — one for a Christian audience and one for a Muslim audience —, both of which come with a participant handbook. A third tool is for working with youth from a Christian perspective. The manuals encourage open discussion about sexuality, reproductive health, and HIV in the context of faith communities. They are not designed to promote religion.

Youth Peer Education Toolkit
Marija Vasileva-Blasev, UNFPA/Y-PEER and Mercedes Torres, FHI

The Youth Peer Education Toolkit is a group of five resources designed to help program managers and master trainers of peer educators. Collectively, these tools should help develop and maintain more effective peer education programs. They are designed to be adapted locally as needed. The toolkit resulted from a collaboration between FHI and the Youth Peer Education Network (Y-PEER), a project coordinated by UNFPA.

HIV Counseling and Testing for Youth: A Manual for Providers, with NEW Training Guide
Justin Mandala and Suzanne Fischer, FHI

This manual is an easy-to-use desk guide on youth and HIV/AIDS, covering topics such as youth-friendly services, counseling young clients about HIV testing and follow-up, contraceptive options, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), life skills, and approaches to referrals. It also contains a list of resources. A corresponding Training Guide, available in 2007, is being developed for training service providers and can be integrated into various types of youth-friendly services training.
