IYWG Publications
YouthLens

These research briefs summarize the latest information on key issues regarding reproductive health and HIV prevention among youth ages 10 to 24. This series began as part of the YouthNet program (2001-2006), led by Family Health International (FHI) (issue Nos. 1-18). FHI is continuing to produce YouthLens as an activity of the IYWG, beginning with issue No. 19.

No. 27. Addressing the Needs of Young Adolescents PDF (136 KB). Although programs are beginning to pay attention to the needs of young adolescents, more evaluations of these efforts are needed. New interventions are generally either community-based efforts or school-based approaches, including new sexuality and life skills education.

No. 26. Youth and Injecting Drug Users PDF (160 KB). Most injecting drug users start the practice before age 25, yet few HIV prevention programs targeting injecting drug use focus on youth — either to prevent the initiation of injecting or to reduce risks of HIV associated with injecting drugs.

No. 25. Helping Parents Improve Adolescent Health PDF (179 KB). New reports from the World Health Organization show the importance of parents for improving adolescent health but also raise questions about how programs address desired parental behaviors. This YouthLens summarizes the new reports. This issue is also available in French (197 KB) and Spanish (156 KB).

No. 24. Youth Peer Education PDF (184 KB). A recent meeting and new research compile scientific evidence and program experiences to show that youth peer education projects can be effective. But the available information leaves questions about delivery strategies, the degree of rigor used in curriculum and planning, and other issues. This issue is also available in French (203 KB) and Spanish (166 KB).

No. 23. New Web Sites Make Information about Youth More Accessible PDF (179 KB). To address the growing volumes of information on youth, the new Interagency Youth Working Group site and expanded youth sections on the DHS and policy.com sites provide guidance to program planners and others.

No. 22. Scaling Up Youth Reproductive Health and HIV Prevention Programs PDF (185 KB). This brief summarizes the latest conceptual thinking and the successful scaling up approaches of large youth projects. It identifies challenging pragmatic issues as well as key actions needed for effective scale-up of youth projects. This issue is also available in French (201 KB) and Spanish (169 KB).

No. 21. Integrating Reproductive Health and HIV Services for Youth PDF (185 KB). Research identifies the need for more attention to pregnancy prevention in a variety of settings, but delivery models need further testing. This issue is also available in French (201 KB) and Spanish (167 KB).

No. 20. School-Based Reproductive Health and HIV Education Programs — An Effective Intervention PDF (181 KB). A review of evaluated programs shows that well-designed programs work, but implementation issues such as teacher training and cultural sensitivities remain challenging. This issue is also available in French (202 KB) and Spanish (164 KB).

No. 19. Community Involvement in Youth Reproductive Health and HIV Prevention PDF (183 KB). Youth projects are increasingly involving community members in designing, shaping, and implementing projects. Research findings are promising, but more program experience and research are needed to understand the impact such efforts have. This issue is also available in French (173 KB) and Spanish (199 KB).
