Adolescence

Adolescence: A Time That Matters (2002, PDF, 1.56 MB)
This advocacy tool uses statistics, case studies, diagrams, and other aids to emphasize the rights and special needs of adolescents and the importance of programs that are specifically tailored to their needs. Information on young people living with HIV is included. Also available in French and Spanish.

The Young Face of NEPAD: Children and Young People in the New Partnership for Africa's Development (2004, PDF, 418 KB)
This document makes the case for investing in Africa's children and adolescents and then outlines priorities; programmatic and policy strategies; and steps for monitoring, peer review, accountability, and mobilizing resources. Also available in French.

Armed Conflict

The Impact of Conflict on Women and Girls in West and Central Africa and the UNICEF Response (2005, PDF, 306 KB)
This document describes the circumstances and challenges of women and girls affected by war in this region and highlights innovative programs being implemented with UNICEF partners to address their needs. The report includes information on gender-based violence and HIV/AIDS. Also available in French.

HIV/AIDS

Children and AIDS: A Stocktaking Report (2007, PDF, 2.08 MB)
This report assesses the first year of the campaign Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS. It notes important actions and changes underway, including a reduction in HIV prevalence resulting from behavior change among young people. It also discusses unmet challenges and future programmatic strategies. Also available in French and Spanish.

Children on the Brink 2004: A Joint Report of New Orphan Estimates and a Framework for Action (2003, PDF, 6.3 MB)
This report discusses data on adolescents and children orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS, with a focus on Sub-Saharan Africa. A section on the specific circumstances and needs of adolescents is included. Also available in French and Spanish.

Girls, HIV/AIDS and Education (2004, PDF, 1.61 MB)
This report describes the spread of the HIV/AIDS epidemic to young people and particularly adolescent girls, the specific challenges and needs of girls, the power of girls' education in curtailing the epidemic, and a call to action for national and international policy-makers. Also available in French and Spanish.

Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers: Do They Matter for Children and Young People Made Vulnerable by HIV/AIDS? (2004, PDF, 3.63 MB)
This desk review examines how poverty reduction strategy papers and national strategic HIV/AIDS plans address young people made vulnerable by HIV. It concludes that few countries can successfully implement changes advocated by these plans, and it makes recommendations for future action and research.

What Parliamentarians Can Do about HIV/AIDS (2003, PDF, 5.1 MB)
This advocacy tool makes the case for the urgency of the issues surrounding young people and HIV/AIDS and calls upon elected leaders to educate their constituencies and to lobby for appropriate legislation and resource allocation. Also available in French.

What Religious Leaders Can Do about HIV/AIDS (2003, PDF, 5.7 MB)
This advocacy tool, tested by religious leaders in Africa and Asia, is intended to educate religious leaders of various faiths about issues regarding young people and HIV/AIDS. The document also encourages religious leaders to educate their communities and use their influence and resources to curtail the epidemic. Also available in French.

This document contains summary descriptions of, as well as hyper-links to, resources about child and youth participation. These resources include research documents, Web sites, programmatic guides, policy tools, and more.  A CD-ROM containing all the resources is also available through UNICEF.

Gender-based Violence and Non-consensual Sex

Child Protection Information Sheets (2006, PDF, 272 KB)
The fourteen information sheets in this booklet each discuss one of the various forms of abuse and exploitation of children and young people, including early marriage and non-consensual sex. Tips for creating a safe environment are included. Also available in French and Spanish.

Early Marriage: A Harmful Traditional Practice (2005, PDF, 1.23 MB)
The research documented here uses data from the Demographic and Household Surveys to identify the prevalence of child marriage and uncover associated statistical factors.

Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting: A Statistical Exploration (2005, PDF, 1.31 MB)
This research report analyzes available statistical information about female genital mutilation and cutting in order to highlight differentials in prevalence and understand associated statistical factors.

Profiting From Abuse (2001, PDF, 919 KB)
This award-winning publication describes the experiences of young people who are involved in the sex trade in their own words and also includes the opinions of concerned experts. Also available in French and Spanish.
