WHO’s Department of Child and Adolescent Health and Development (CAH) advocates for a comprehensive, multi-sectoral approach, focusing its technical assistance on the contribution of the health sector. CAH also supports the collection and analysis of data to monitor implementation and progress towards global goals. Helping Parents in Developing Countries Improve Adolescents' Health (PDF, 44 pages, 1.1 MB)

The WHO convened a meeting of researchers engaged in projects involving parenting of adolescents in developing countries. This document provides a summary of the discussions in the meeting, which highlight the importance of parents in preventing adolescent health risk behaviors, the ways in which parents influence these behaviors, and the implications for programs aiming to improve adolescent health. Summaries of Projects in Developing Countries Assisting the Parents of Adolescents (PDF, 248 pages, 1.94 MB)

This document identifies and summarizes 34 projects around the world that aimed to help parents of adolescents in developing countries improve their children's health and development. Each summary includes the project objectives, donor, implementing partner, implementation and approach, interventions, resources used, evaluation, outcomes, lessons learned, and future plans. (2007)

Preventing HIV/AIDS in Young People: A Systematic Review of the Evidence from Developing Countries (PDFs, various sizes)

This review provides guidance for policy makers, program managers, and researchers working on HIV and young people on what interventions work best – and what does not work – in preventing HIV infection in young people, so that limited resources can be targeted to the most effective interventions. Risk and Protective Factors Affecting Adolescent Reproductive Health in Developing Countries

Based on an in-depth literature review of 158 articles (screened from a larger pool), this report examines factors that affect premarital sex, number of sexual partners, contraceptive and condom use, HIV infection, and other issues. A 12-page summary of the book-length study is available. (2005)
